1. Metro - Line 3 (Blue Line)

The Metro is the most popular way to reach the city. Follow the signs for "To Trains" from the arrivals hall, cross the pedestrian bridge, and look for the Blue Line (Line 3). This line takes you straight to Syntagma Square (the heart of the city) and Monastiraki in about 40 minutes.

  • Schedule: Trains depart every 36 minutes.
  • Hours: Roughly 6:30 AM to 11:30 PM.
  • Tickets: A one-way airport ticket is 9€, while a 2-way ticket is 16€. To pay, you can simply tap your contactless bank card on the validation machines.

2. Express Bus - Line X95

If you land in the middle of the night or are on a tight budget, the X95 Express Bus is your best friend. It runs 24/7 and drops you off right at Syntagma Square. The trip to Syntagma Square takes about 50 to 60 minutes.

There are other routes too: X96 goes to the port of Piraeus (if you’re catching a ferry), and X93 goes to the Kifisou intercity bus station.

  • Schedule: Every 10-30 minutes.
  • Hours: 24/7
  • Tickets: 5.50€ (half price for students and seniors with ID). Buy them at the kiosk right outside the arrivals exit or via the ATH.ENA Card app. Remember to validate your ticket once you board.

3. Suburban Railway (Proastiakos)

The Suburban Railway departs from the same station as the Metro. While the Metro is better for the tourist center, the Proastiakos is ideal if you need to reach the Athens Central Railway Station (Larissa Station) to catch a train to Meteora or Thessaloniki. The journey to Athens Central Station takes approximately 40 to 45 minutes.

  • Schedule: Usually every 15-30 minutes, though not all go to the central station (some head toward Kiato). Direct trains to Athens Central Station (Larissis Station) run hourly.
  • Hours: Roughly 6 AM to 11 PM.
  • Tickets: The Metro and the Proastiakos use the same 9€ one-way airport ticket, which is valid for 90 minutes across the transit network once validated.

4. Taxi

Taxis in Athens are yellow and available 24/7 at the official rank outside Exit 3. Athens uses a fixed fare system for trips between the airport and the city center "inner zone" (which includes major tourist hubs like Syntagma, Monastiraki, and Plaka).

  • Day rate (05:00 - 00:00): 40€
  • Night rate (00:00 - 05:00): 55€
  • Note: This price includes tolls and luggage fees, so don't let a driver tell you otherwise!

5. Uber and FreeNow

Uber works differently in Athens than in many other countries. Instead of private drivers, the app connects you with licensed taxis. FreeNow is also very popular locally, and usually has more drivers available.

Since legally all taxi rides traveling between Athens Airport and the designated "Athens City Center Ring" are subject to a strict flat rate, you’ll get the same prices as if you booked a taxi directly.

6. Private Transfers

If you want the smoothest possible arrival experience, booking a private transfer is the most comfortable option. A driver will wait for you at arrivals with a sign, help with your bags, and often provide some local tips during the drive. It’s slightly more expensive than a taxi (starting around 45-50€), and you can also book a bigger vehicle, which is useful if you’re traveling with a group.
