Places to Visit in Mykonos

Your cruise docks at Piraeus at 7am and leaves at 6pm. That's 11 hours to explore Athens - but not if you're dragging two suitcases up the hill to the Acropolis. The marble paths are slippery, the metro stairs are steep, and the Acropolis Museum won't even let you in with large bags.

Here's how to spend your day in Athens completely hands-free.

The luggage problem at Piraeus Port

Piraeus is the largest passenger port in Europe. Over 17 million passengers pass through every year, and during cruise season (April to October) you can expect 4 to 5 ships docking on the same morning.

There are no public luggage lockers at Piraeus cruise terminals. The port authority removed most of them years ago. Your options: leave bags on the ship (only works if you're returning), find a storage service, or carry everything through 35-degree Athens heat.

How LUGGit solves it

Instead of finding a locker or a shop, a Keeper (Driver) in an orange vest meets you right at the cruise terminal gates.

  • Book online or on the app before you dock
  • A Keeper (Driver) meets you at your terminal gate
  • Bags are sealed with a unique ID tag and insured up to 1,200€
  • Get live tracking via WhatsApp all day
  • Bags delivered back to the port, your hotel, or Athens Airport

Prices start from €2/bag. The whole handoff takes about 5 minutes.

Best value: Metro Line 1 (Green Line). Walk from your terminal to Piraeus station (10 to 15 minutes). Buy a 24-hour ticket for €4.10 if you plan to use the metro more than 3 times.

Taxi warning: Only use white taxis with visible meters. Refuse any driver who quotes a "fixed price" at the port. The meter should be set to tariff 1 (daytime rate).

Your 10-hour Athens itinerary

A tested walking route that covers the highlights without rushing. Dock at 7am, back by 5pm.

7:30am - Hand off luggage. Meet your Keeper (Driver) at the terminal gate. Bags sealed, tagged, tracked in 5 minutes.

8:00am - Metro to Monastiraki. Line 1 from Piraeus (25 minutes). You arrive in the heart of old Athens.

8:30am - Acropolis. Walk uphill from Monastiraki. Before 9am you'll have the Parthenon almost to yourself. By 10am the tour groups flood in. Entry: €30 full ticket. No large bags allowed.

10:30am - Acropolis Museum. Glass floor shows excavations beneath your feet. Entry: €15. Air conditioned - a lifesaver in July and August.

12:30pm - Lunch in Plaka. Skip the tourist traps with photo menus. Try Kostas on Pentelis street - best souvlaki in Athens for €3 (cash only, expect a queue). Or Abibayio for pork roll and octopus (rated 4.8/5).

2:00pm - Monastiraki Flea Market. Browse along Ifestou street. Leather sandals, olive oil soap, vintage records. The antique shops on Avyssinias Square are worth a detour.

3:00pm - Panathenaic Stadium. Where the first modern Olympics were held in 1896. Walk on the actual marble track. Entry: €12 (includes audio guide).

4:00pm - Metro back to Piraeus. Line 1 from Syntagma or Monastiraki. Give yourself an hour buffer.

5:00pm - Back at port. Your bags are delivered to the terminal gate or the ship's luggage drop-off.

Practical tips for cruise passengers

  • Know your gate number. Piraeus has gates E1 through E12 plus Gate A. Write it down
  • Bring cash. Not all small shops accept cards
  • Wear proper shoes. Acropolis paths are uneven marble - no sandals
  • Water. Athens hits 35 to 40 degrees in summer. Refill at the Acropolis Museum or metro stations
  • Don't take the last metro. Ship departs at 6pm? Take the 4pm metro, not the 4:45pm one

Frequently asked questions

Can I store luggage at Piraeus Port?

There are no public lockers at Piraeus cruise terminals. Your best options are LUGGit (a Keeper picks up bags at the terminal gate, from €2 per bag) or app-based storage like Bounce or Stasher in central Athens.

How far is Piraeus Port from central Athens?

About 10km. The metro (Line 1) takes 25 minutes and costs €1.20. A taxi takes 15 to 20 minutes and costs €12 to €15.

Is it safe to leave bags on the cruise ship during a day trip?

If you are returning to the same ship, yes - your cabin and bags are safe onboard. This only works for round-trip passengers, not for people ending their cruise in Piraeus.

What time should I get back to the port?

Most cruise lines require you back 1 to 2 hours before departure. If your ship leaves at 6pm, aim to be at the port by 4:30pm at the latest.

Can LUGGit deliver my bags to Athens Airport instead of back to the port?

Yes. You can have bags picked up at the cruise terminal in the morning and delivered to Athens Airport later that day if you are flying out after your cruise.
